Many of the spas are great for both one’s health and for cultural excursions. In the Northeastern portion of the country, near Venice, there are numerous hot springs in the volcanic highlands with treatments available for mud therapy as well. A place known as Abano Terme has nearly two million visitors per year.

In the foothills of the Apennines mountains, there are about fifteen different spas, many containing significant quantities of sodium chloride, sodium iodide or sodium bromide. Some of the spas are sulphurous. The spas are recommended for those with respiratory system problems, vascular disease and skin diseases.

Tuscany is another lovely region for thermal spas. These springs were in place during the Roman times and now exist today. The spa at Montecatini has more than 1.7 million visitors per year. Chianciano has more than 1.8 million visitors, many of them from abroad. The Latium area has volcanic activity which has made for several spas, particularly Fiuggi, which is especially good for those who have kidney stones.

The bulk of thermal spas are located in southern Italy around the Gulf of Naples. This is one of the most active volcanic zones in Italy with heat very close to the surface. Ischia boasts 2.4 million visitors per year. This place offers relief from rheumatism, arthritis, metabolic disorders and obesity.

The Hotel Therme has six thermal pools that are deep enough to get up to one’s neck in. A Hotel was built just below the spa and offers the beauty of the Swiss Alps, spectacular lodging and food and lovely surroundings. The spa is open all year round in spite of winter weather. Different pools are filled with petals of flowers, some are extremely hot and at least one is called the Ice Pool because it is 14 degrees Celsius.

Bathers can lie in the pools or rest on recliners next to the pools. There is a Wellness Center with thirteen therapy rooms and a jet Jacuzzi.
